Musicology is a brand new quarterly print publication, from the makers of the NME. Musicology focuses on stories from music history, and uncommon perspectives on music theory, and is aimed at music lovers with a deeper appreciation of music.
The brief was to design a cover for the magazine, plus three 2-page spreads. My idea for the cover was to keep things simple, to contrast with the inside spreads.
For the spreads, I wanted to combine a retro feel through collage, with some vibrating typography and graphic elements - neutral on the outside, party on the inside!
The image treatment employed on the cover and throughout the spreads was to create a colour overlay over black and white photography, and then play around masking clothing with city lights, clouds and sequins. The inside imagery was placed on a vibrating colour background, inspired by the power of music to vibrate.
